Accord on court complex land

Following Tuesday’s talks between the District Collector A. Kowsigan and leaders of the action council constituted for pursuing the early construction of the sanctioned Kollam court complex, an understanding in principle has been reached to construct the complex on the 2.37-acre revenue land along Asramam Link Road.

The former district chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Sooranad Rajashekaran, who is the action council chairman, said that since various service organisations were opposed to taking over a portion of the NGO Quarters complex near the Civil Station for constructing the court complex, the council had earlier submitted a memorandum to Dr. Kowsigan for identifying an ideal alternative location.

Dr. Rajashekaran said that the land along Link Road would be most ideal since it did not require any evictions. Dr. Kowsigan was also of the opinion that the land now lying idle could be utilised for a constructive cause. “The court complex has been pending since 2004 and it is high time it became a reality,” he said.

Dr. Rajashekaran said that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had assured the action council during a recent meeting that if the land identified was agreeable to all concerned, then the construction could begin immediately.

The Collector had also inspected the site on Wednesday. When contacted, Dr. Kowsigan said that an understanding had been reached. At the same time, he said that a probable apprehension was that the action council did not represent all the persons concerned. But efforts would be taken to convince all concerned.

Meanwhile, the lawyers who have constituted a separate body for the issue are meeting on Friday morning to come out with their own stand on the location for the complex. After the meeting, they will have talks with the Collector.
