Chief Minister announces 16 mega projects

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday announced 16 mega projects for the district including a Rs.10.82-crore agricultural revival scheme focussing on the food security of 192 tribal hamlets in Attappady.

Presiding over a mass contact programme here, Mr. Chandy also disclosed that a new block for the new Government Medical College here would be constructed within two years at an estimated cost of Rs.360 crore.

A cancer treatment and research centre would be established close to the medical college, he said.

Three lakh petitions

The Chief Minister said he received over three lakh petitions during the second phase of the mass contact programmes he conducted across the State. 

Stating that he was according top priority to tribal welfare, Mr. Chandy said all tribal households in Attappady would get solar power under a Union government scheme.

The land acquisition for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Palakkad would be completed soon. Classes would begin at the temporary campus in August.

He said an Information Technology Park would be established at Koppam, near Pattambi. 

Water for Chittur

The Chief Minister also disclosed that Rs.50 crore had been set aside for the construction of the Moolathara right bank canal which would carry water from the Parambikulam- Aliyar Project for water-starved regions of Chittur taluk. A new road would be constructed between Shoranur and Kuttipuram at a cost of Rs.120 crore.

He announced construction of six link bypasses for Palakkad town and a bio-rice park at Kumbidi. 

He said a new tourism circuit linking Silent Valley, Parambikulam and Nelliyampathy would be established. 

As many as 18,234 online applications and an equal number of fresh applications were handled during the mass contact programme, titled Karuna-2015. Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar presided over the programme. MLAs K. Achuthan, C.P. Muhammed, N. Shamsudheen, Shafi Parambil and V.T. Balaram were present.
