Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will launch his campaign in the Malampuzha Assembly constituency, where he is seeking re-election, by inaugurating an election convention at Town Hall here at 10 a.m. on Monday.
Later at 4 p.m. at the venue, he will inaugurate the election campaign of the Left Democratic Front candidate for the Palakkad Assembly constituency, K.K. Divakaran.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and his supporters are planning a rousing welcome for him at Palakkad Railway Station where he will arrive by Amritha Express in the morning.
In the Malampuzha constituency, booth-level committees have been formed for his campaign. Mr. Achuthanandan is contesting the seat for the third time, winning it in 2001 and 2006 with a huge majority. In 2001, he became the Leader of Opposition and in 2006, the Chief Minister.
Malampuzha has the credit of electing E.K. Nayanar in a similar fashion in 1980, when he went on to become Chief Minister, and in 1982, Leader of Opposition. The constituency is considered a Left fortress, electing only CPI(M) candidates since its formation in 1960.
