The long-standing problem over waste disposal in Thrissur City Corporation will soon have a solution.

A conference of government and corporation officials and local organisations protesting against pollution around the dumping yard at Lalur, convened by Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan here on Tuesday, agreed on a project for scientific treatment of the waste.

The Chief Minister told the media that the conference had accepted a project proposed by Pathiyoor Gopinath, professor of Kerala Agricultural University, for decentralised processing of the waste using modern technology. Lalur would be freed of foul smell within six months. The project also proposed setting up of treatment facilities in all the 52 divisions of the corporation over the next three years.

The Chief Minister said that the work on the project would start on June 15 this year. The University would depute Mr. Gopinath and staff for carrying out the project. About 200 persons would be employed for the project costing Rs. 8 crore to Rs. 10 crore.
