Minister for revamping Puthiyakavuchira tourism project

Minister for Tourism and Home, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, has said steps would be taken for revamping the Puthiyakavuchira tourism project in the Adoor municipal limits.

The Minister, accompanied by local MLA, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, was on a visit to Puthiyakavuchira on Tuesday. It was the MLA who had taken up the sad state of affairs at Puthiyakavuchira with the Minister.

It is noteworthy that the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation had closed down the wayside amenity centre, Motel Aaram, at Puthiyakavuchira on March 31 citing financial grounds.

The centre was opened as part of tourism promotion four years ago.

The Minister has directed the District Tourism Promotion council to take over the project in the larger interests of tourism promotion in this part of the State.

Puthiyakavuchira is a fresh water lake where the Tourism department had launched the tourism project in 2002. The amenity centre was constructed in traditional style and the KTDC has been running it for the past four years. The Tourism department had constructed the amenity centre along the MC Road near Adoor Government High School junction spending Rs. 125 lakhs.

KTDC sources say the centre was running on a heavy loss ultimately leading to its closure six months ago.

However, the MLA alleged that the closure of Motel Aaram was due to gross mismanagement.

The project also envisaged boat rides in the lake surrounding the amenity centre that housed a restaurant and a retiring facility.

The footpath and the boat landing facility attached to it has already been covered with bushes and the lake heavily weeded due to criminal negligence on the part of the authorities concerned, MLA alleged.

The Minister said a high-level meeting would be convened soon for revamping the Puthiyakavuchira tourism project
