The monsoon session of Kerala Assembly had a dramatic end on Thursday with the Opposition bringing the proceedings to a halt alleging government inaction on the grabbing of Adivasi land at Attappady in Palakkad district by Pune-based Sarjan Realties for setting up a wind energy unit.
After a wrangle with the treasury benches lasting several minutes, the Opposition members rushed into the well of the House and began shouting slogans against the government making it impossible to proceed with the business listed for the day.
Faced with the Opposition stir, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan rushed through the business and declared the session closed at 10.55 a.m.
Opposition's stance
The Opposition raised the issue a second time during the current session through a notice seeking leave for adjournment of the proceedings to discuss what it termed mindless Adivasi land grab duping the revenue, registration, forest and power departments.
This time round, the Opposition ire was over what it termed the government's failure to act on a report submitted by the Palakkad District Collector and order stoppage of the wind power unit.
Detail exam needed
However, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Minister for Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities A.K. Balan took the position that while the government was firm in the matter, it could do so only after a detailed examination of all the records and transactions over the last several years by a high-level committee.
