Differences rock State NDA again

Published - February 14, 2017 06:11 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Internecine differences are threatening to rupture the ties between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies in the State yet again.

Principal ally Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) and the political outfit of tribal leader C.K. Janu have publicly voiced their dissensions accusing the BJP of failing to honour the commitment given to them prior to the Assembly elections and implementing the accord reached soon after the national executive held in Kozhikode in September.

Though the main constituents accuse the BJP State leadership of not having what it takes to run the front as a cohesive whole and emerging as the main opposition in the State, the differences are believed to have stemmed from the delay in sharing the boards and Corporations under the Central government.

The NDA government has completed almost half of its tenure and the alliance partners were offered positions in the boards and Corporations commensurate to the strength and influence they wield in the State.

Several rounds of parleys were held for reaching an understanding in the matter. Deadlines set for sorting it out have not been observed.

Even the BJP State leadership could not reach a final agreement in selecting their nominees and the promises doled out by the Central and State leaderships, the allies rue, have not been fulfilled.

Small parties lured into the alliance immediately before the Assembly elections too are reported to be unhappy, but do not have the courage to air their woes in public.

The BDJS alone has openly come out against the BJP and had at a point said that it has other political options in the State. But the BJP does not seem to have taken the threat seriously.

Party sources told The Hindu here that an NDA meeting to be held soon would try to control the damage and soothe ruffled feathers. But the leadership deems the dissent raised mainly by the BDJS and also others as a ploy for hard bargaining.

Rocking the boat would not be easy for the BDJS since it would not be accommodated in either the Left Democratic Front (LDF) or the United Democratic Front (LDF). The same is the plight with others too.

In this context, the allies have no choice but mount pressure on the BJP for an early solution so that they would get at least two year in the saddle. In the given circumstances, apportioning the posts is not an easy task either, sources said.
