Public Works Minister G. Sudhakaran has called for the abolition of all self-financing colleges in the State, as they fail to make any positive contributions to society.
He was speaking at a function organised at the University College here on Friday by the college's alumni association.
The colleges set up by corporates and religious leaders with the aid of black money should be closed down, as they were the ones who were ruining the educational sector in the State, and not the students. These colleges lead to violence, injustice and social inequality, and create a student community with no social awareness, he said.
Roads built by students who passed out from self-financing colleges crumbled easily and were filled with potholes, and doctors from theses institutions became corrupt, he said.
Mr. Sudhakaran called for a strict re-evaluation of all self-financing colleges, suggesting that the ones that followed all government regulations regarding merit-based admissions, reservations, and fees, and had an academic legacy may be exempted.
However, not even 10% of the self-financing colleges would fulfill these criteria, he said.
