Asserting that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh cannot be discussed at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Congress on Friday said the internationalisation of the changes to Article 370 was a “diplomatic failure” of the Indian government.
Senior Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said at a press conference that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should break the silence and immediately demand the cancellation of the meeting.
The Congress leader said changing the law of one’s own land was an internal matter for the country.
He said that though the Prime Minister had deputed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to talk to China about the internal changes to J&K and Ladakh, the Chinese establishment “took the matter to the UN right under his nose”.
“We are indeed shocked to note what is happening at the the United Nations and it is a matter of grave concern. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an integral part of India. This is a non-negotiable issue.” “In the past 55 to 60 years, it is for the first time that the issue of Kashmir is being internationalised at the UNSC,” he said.
“This is a grave strategic failure for India. The External Affairs Minister was in China and explaining them about the decision while China approached the UNSC for the meeting. And the Chinese government gets the meeting organised on the request of Pakistan,” he said.
“I implore and beseech the Prime Minister to get the meeting cancelled. It is a not a discussable issue,” said the Congress spokesperson.
