Humayun Khan, Chairman, Ballari Urban Development Authority, speaking at the launch of Village and Slum Area Adoption Scheme, organised by the Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University, in Ballari on Friday.

Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by adopting Gautham Nagar under its Village and Slum Area Adoption Scheme.

M.S. Subhas, Vice-Chancellor, told presspersons here on Friday that the idea of adopting the area on a pilot basis was to ensure overall development, including skill development of youths, besides giving practical training to postgraduate students of Sociology, Social Work and Economics to understand the ground realities.

A baseline survey of the area, including basic amenities, health, education, employment opportunities and the like, would be carried out after discussions with the residents, he said.

Opportunities aplenty

According to him, there were many opportunities for youths to set up micro/mini units of their own and the University’s focus was to ensure that the youths honed necessary skills in this regard. Humayun Khan, Chairman of Ballari Urban Development Authority, who inaugurated the event, assured full cooperation for the noble cause taken up by the university.

T.G. Vittal, General Secretary of Gandhi Bhavan, and Basavaraj Benni, Professor and Head Department of Economics, were among the others present.
