Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has instructed the district administration to supply additional kerosene to flood-affected people as they may need it for fuel and lighting.

She was speaking at a review meeting after an aerial survey of flood-hit villages in Bagalkot district on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkot R. Ramchandran told the Union Minister that an additional 95,000 litres of kerosene had already been distributed.

Former Minister Murugesh Nirani, MLA, who was also present at the meeting, requested Ms. Sitharaman to grant required funds for tackling the flood situation.

Mr. Ramchandaran said that around 150 villages in the district had been affected by floods, 86,921 families had been evacuated, and 60,691 persons had taken shelter in 150 rehabilitation centres.

He said 168 temporary medical centres had been set up and around 51,000 head of cattle had been shifted to safer places. The Deputy Commissioner said that while two persons and 29 head of cattle had died, crops on over 14,000 hectares had been damaged and the government has released ₹10 crore for flood relief.

He said that two teams of the NDRF and two of the SDRF, three teams of the military, over 1,000 police personnel, 100 members of the Fire and Emergency Services, and officials of various departments have been deployed for flood-relief work.
