Rangayana to organise theatre fest to mark Shakespeare’s birth anniversary

Programmes to be held at various places in Shivamogga district

Rangayana, Shivamogga, has organised a series of programmes across the district from January 13 to 19 to mark the 450th birth anniversary of English poet and playwright William Shakespeare, its chairman Iqbal Ahmed has said.

A theatre fest of screening films based on the life and achievements of William Shakespeare and a workshop on his works will be held to mark the occasion, he said at a press conference here on Saturday.

The films based on Shakespeare's plays ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ and ‘King Lear’ will be screened at the DVS College of Arts and Science, Sahyadri Arts and Science College, Kamala Nehru National College for Women here, Tunga Mahavidyalaya in Tirthahalli, L.B.S. College in Sagar, Kodachadri First Grade College in Hosanagar, Sir. M. Visvesvaraya Arts and Commerce College in Bhadravati and Government First Grade College at Shikaripur and Sorab on January 13 and 14. Following the shows, the students would participate in an interactive session with experts, he said.

A cultural workshop on William Shakespeare would be held at Suvarna Samskruti Bhavan in Shivamogga on January 15. Literary critics Rajendra Chenni, Jaswanth Jadhav, and theatre activists Nataraj Honnavalli and B.R. Venkataraman Aithal would be resource persons. More than 200 students from various colleges in the district would attend the workshop, he said.

A national-level theatre fest on William Shakespeare would be held at Suvarna Samskruti Bhavan here from January 17 to 19. On January 17, artistes from the Jaipur-based Ujagar Dramatic Association would stage a drama titled ‘Kusumal Swapno’, which is based on Shakespeare's work ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’. Artistes of Omniflame Art Society from Assam will present an Assamese drama titled ‘Fall of a King’, which is based on Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’, he said. On January 19, artistes of Theatre Tatkal troupe, Bengaluru, will present a Kannada drama ‘Shakespeare manege banda.’ The play is based on Nataraj Huliyar’s play of the same title. The shows on all tree days will commence at 6.30 p.m. During the theatre fest, posters, photographs and paintings of William Shakespeare and his plays will be displayed at the Suvarna Samskruti Bhavan, he said.
