Popularly referred to as the “golden girl of Kannada cinema”, Ramya (originally, Divya Spandana) is always in the limelight for one reason or the other. However, these days she is in the news more for her political moves than her celluloid achievements.
Though there have been rumours in the past that she would eventually enter politics, she dismissed them saying they were just that, rumours.
But then, Ramya did not disappoint those who spread those “rumours” by officially joining the Congress when Rahul Gandhi visited Bangalore last year. Though it was believed that Ramya would contest for the post of the State Youth Congress president, she chose to climb the party ladder from the ranks contesting in a booth-level election from Shantinagar Assembly segment.
Of course, this field is not new to Ramya as she grew up in a family that has connection to politics. Ramya’s mother Ranjitha is an active Congress worker in Mandya.
A popular actor in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films, Ramya actively campaigned for Congress candidates in the recent Assembly elections. Previously too, she had worked in an election campaign for actor-turned-politician M.H. Ambarish.
Ramya, who made her debut in 2003 in Abhi starring Puneet Rajkumar, has donned roles as female lead for almost all top heroes of Kannada cinema. She is one of the most sought-after actor in the industry, though she has had her share of failures and controversies.
According to Ramya, she is contesting from Mandya as she considers the constituency as “Nammooru” (her own place). Ramya, who lost her guardian, R.T. Narayan, immediately after she filed her nomination papers on Saturday, is expected to launch her campaign soon.
