Heavy rain in coastal Andhra Pradesh has hit supply of fish to Mysuru thereby leading to spiralling of fish prices, according to the authorities of the Karnataka State Co-Operative Fisheries Federation Limited.
Those who had been given the tender to supply fish to Mysuru have backed out as heavy rain coastal Andhra has made it impossible for the fishermen to continue with their work.
In fact, the federation had announced a few months back that fish would be sold at subsidised rate, but now because of short supply its price has been increased from Tuesday, said federation Managind Director Gangadhar V. Maddikeri. Speaking to The Hindu, he said: “Suppliers used to bring five tonnes of fish to Mysuru from Andhra Pradesh once in two days. Since there has been heavy rainfall in the whole of coastal Andhra Pradesh following depression in the Bay of Bengal, fish production has come down considerably. Fishermen are unable to carry on their work owing to incessant rains there.” As supply has been affected, the federation has decided to float a tender yet again. So, the new rates are as follows: fish weighing between 1 and 2 kg will cost Rs. 130; those between 2 and 3 kg will cost Rs.140; if it is between 3 and 5 kg, it will cost Rs.150 and fish weighing more than 5 kg will cost Rs.160. And the price in each of the above categories will cost Rs. 5 more in Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Madikeri and Bengaluru.
