Over 28,000 to be conferred degrees at the 95th convocation

Women continue to outdo men in higher education as 57 percent of candidates who will be conferred with various degrees at the 95th annual convocation of the University of Mysore here on Friday are women.

Among the candidates bagging the gold medals and cash prizes, women top the list.

Of the 28,580 candidates, who will be conferred various degrees at the convocation, 16,259 are women and 12,321 are men. A total of 6,507 candidates, including 3,461 women candidates (53 percent), will be conferred master’s degrees and 21,683 candidates, including 12,665 women candidates (58 percent), will receive the bachelor’s degrees.

This year, 318 gold medals and 172 cash prizes will be shared by 202 candidates, including 123 women candidates (61 per cent).

In all, 396 candidates will receive Ph.D. degrees in various subjects. Among them, 133 (34 per cent) are women and 257 (66 per cent) are men.

Compared to previous convocation, the number of candidates getting the degrees is more this year. Last year, 25,599 candidates had received various degrees and 295 candidates had got Ph.Ds.

Giving details of the convocation to presspersons here on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa said women were outshining men in the field of higher education and that is a healthy development. “Women candidates are more studious about studies. Therefore, they stand out,” he added.

Event at 11 a.m.

The Vice-Chancellor said the 95th annual convocation will be held at 11 a.m. at the Crawford Hall. Governor Vajubhai Vala will declare the convocation open and preside over the event.

The former I.I.Sc. Director and eminent scientist Goverdhan Mehta will deliver the convocation address.

Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R.V. Deshpande will be present.

According to Prof. Rangappa, only 12 top gold medalists from five different faculties will receive the medals from the Governor..

The Ph.D. degrees, medals and cash prizes will be presented at a separate function at the Crawford Hall the same day at 4 p.m. Writer and film personality Nagathihalli Chandrashekar will be the chief guest.

Honorary doctorate

Prof. Rangappa said the university would be conferring honorary doctorate on Wipro Chairperson Azeem Premji, noted novelist S L Bhyrappa and film personality Nagathihalli Chandrashekar.
