There is some good news for students aspiring to take up medical courses in the State.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given the nod to start three new government medical colleges in Kodagu, Karwar and Chamarajanagar from the coming academic year.
Announcing this at a press conference in Kalaburagi city on Friday, Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil said that 450 new medical seats have been added for the State under the government quota, with each of the three new medical colleges being allowed an intake of 150 students each. Dr. Patil said besides this, the MCI, after visiting the new government medical colleges started last year at Kalaburagi, Gadag and Koppal, has renewed its permission to admit 150 students each in these colleges in the coming year, after the government fulfilled all infrastructure and faculty requirements in these colleges. The MCI has also accorded permanent recognition to the Bangalore Medical College and permitted an intake of 250 students every year, along with the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences at Hubballi getting permanent recognition with a permitted intake of 150 students. Only two old government medical colleges with an intake of 150 students each at Mysuru and Ballari await permanent recognition of the MCI.
Dr. Patil said that with the MCI’s nod for the three new medical colleges, the total number of seats in the State stood at a record 2,200.
Dr. Patil said that all the new government medical colleges had been established in remote backward areas. “We will now focus on starting medical colleges at Yadgir, Bagalkot, Haveri, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, and Chickballapur,” he said.
