The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is preparing for emergency pumping, directly from the river, if storage levels in the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir (KRS), the primary source of drinking water to Mysuru, dips alarmingly.
As of now, water is being drawn from the distribution canals at the pumping stations, but the day is not too far when the water level could go below 68 feet, and has to be sourced directly from the river.
New pump
A heavy-duty motor pump costing ₹1.78 crore has been procured for the purpose. The new motor will be operated at the emergency pumping station, used only when pumping has to be carried out from the river.
“We don’t want to take chances. We have been making arrangements well ahead of time for emergency pumping,” MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha told The Hindu . Steps have been taken to ensure smooth pumping and regular supply until the onset of monsoon at the emergency pumping station, he said.
