The demolition drive against encroachments on parking spaces in commercial and residential apartments here resumed on Tuesday after a gap of five days. By evening, the encroachments on four of the five targeted buildings were cleared.

With Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Rajendra Cholan and HDMC commissioner Noor Mansoor leading from the front, the officials pulled down buildings, including the one housing a hospital.

At Chitaguppi Park off Club Road, the Deputy Commissioner ordered for removal of the gate of Classic Enclave Apartment, leading to the cellar, which was kept locked reportedly by the “owner” of the cellar.

The residents of the apartment complained to the authorities that the cellar was being used for commercial purposes and they were not being allowed to park their vehicles.

Monitoring

Mr. Cholan ordered for removal of the encroached structures and make space available for parking. He also directed the team head to take steps to measure the adjoining building Ahalya Plaza and clear the encroachments. He then visited Deshpande Nagar, where encroachments in Liberty Arcade, that houses a hospital, were being removed.

MR. Cholan also monitored the demolition work at Janani Muttagi Complex at Toravi Galli. At Sheelavantara Oni, the Deputy Commissioner ordered for issue of notices to the owners of KM Residence, for not clearing the debris to make space for parking. In the same street, the demolition of the shops in the cellar of MK Complex to make 448.96 sq. metre available for parking was initiated on Tuesday.

However, as earthmovers could be not employed due to space constraints, manual demolition was initiated and it is likely to be completed on Wednesday.

The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation and the district administration are set to launch the demolition drive simultaneously at 12 locations from Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan told presspersons that 12 teams had been formed for each of the 12 zones of the corporation and they would simultaneously conduct the drive with police protection.

He said they wanted to complete the drive in a week and begin the process of identifying and demarcating no-parking zones.

A meeting of officials was held on Wednesday evening to chalk out an action plan for the drive. The HDMC plans to clear encroachments in 30 buildings on Wednesday.
