Farmers from across Ballari district, under the banner of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene and the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, on Friday staged a demonstration to protest against the meagre compensation for loss of crop in the pre-monsoon showers.
They also demanded that paddy procurement centres should be opened immediately in view of crash in the market prices of paddy .
In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, Darur Purushotamagouda and V.S. Shivashankar, presidents of the respective district units, said that the farmers, especially paddy growers, were in deep crisis after suffering huge loss of crop in the recent heavy rain.
They have urged the government to announce a minimum of Rs. 20,000 per acre to compensate for the loss of paddy.
According to them, the market price for paddy had crashed to Rs. 1,100 from Rs. 1,650 and they wanted the Chief Minister to ordering setting up procurement centres at the earliest.
