Scanty rainfall and depleting water-level in the Alamatti dam across the Krishna has had an adverse impact on the dam’s hydel power generation unit as electricity generation has decreased this year compared with last year.
Target
The Alamatti Power Generation Unit had a target of generating 560 lakh units of power in 2012-13. However, it generated only 320 lakh units between April 12 and October 12.
According to officials, last year, during the same period, 380 lakh units of power were generated.
They admitted that owing to depleting water-level in the dam, it was impossible to generate the targeted quantity of power this year.
The power generation station comprises one unit which has capacity of 15 MW and five units with a capacity of 55 MW each.
The full reservoir level is 519.6 metres.
The six units can generate power to the maximum capacity only when at least 42,000 cusecs of water is released from all the crest gates of the dam.
At present, only 8,000 cusecs of water is being discharged which facilitates generation of 60 MW from the six units, the officials said.
The power generation does not function from April to the second week of July as water is not discharged from the dam during this period.
The power that is generated is supplied to the Basavanabagewadi–Mahalingpur grid.
