Cauvery: Sugarcane farmers welcome verdict

The Karnataka State Sugarcane Farmers Association has welcomed the Supreme Court verdict on appeals filed by the riparian States against the final award of the Cauvery Waters Tribunal in 2007.

The verdict, enhancing Karnataka’s share of water by 14.75 tmc ft, has given the farmers a sense of relief, said Kurubur Shanthakumar, President of the Association.

He said it is significant that the verdict paves way for extension of cultivable land in the State and augurs well for the agricultural development in the Cauvery command area in Karnataka. “But we are awaiting details on distress sharing in the event of a drought and that is most important,” he added.
