With Ramzan starting on Friday, the sales of taqiyah or caps are soaring. This year, varieties of caps have flooded the markets. Different hues, materials and designs … there are a lot to choose from.
Aamir Omer of Karim’s Shop on OPH Road, who sells a variety of caps, said there was a lot of demand for caps from Turkey. This is mainly because of the material used to make the caps, which has a cooling effect irrespective of the temperature.
Though the regular netted, white caps are sold throughout the year, the special caps from other countries are in great demand during Ramzan. Youngsters prefer different styles in varied hues. Woollen caps from Afghanistan that look sophisticated and elegant are usually worn by the elders, particularly during Eid.
There are many outlets where these caps are sold. Many crop up outside the city’s many prayer halls. These caps, depending on the style and material, are sold at anywhere between Rs. 50 and Rs. 5,000.
Also, high on the list of must buys for the month are j anamaz or prayer mats. Prayer mats that are most sought-after are the pure wool ones from Turkey that are made without any chemicals. The price of these mats range from Rs. 90 to Rs. 6,000.
Treat for olfactory senses
Tiny vials of sweet smelling oils seem to beckon all. These perfume oils or attar are much in demand round the year as they are non-alcoholic and concentrated. Surma , a fine powder that is applied to the eye like kohl, is also much in demand all through the year. But their sale spikes during Ramzan.
The price of attar vials with a capacity of 3 ml varies from Rs. 30 to Rs. 150. The price depends on the long-lasting nature of the perfume oils. The much-preferred fragrances during Ramzan are musk, Jannatul Firdause (also known as king of attar), Jannatul Nayeem, Hiba, Sheher, Dehnal Oudh, Falak, Mogra and Kacchi Gali, mainly because of their long-lasting nature.
Attar is used to mainly keep oneself fresh and energised. It’s also perfect as a gift this time of the year, as it is a sign of peace and harmony.
