Acute drinking-water problem hits more than 12 villages

Acute drinking water problem hits more that 12 villages as bore-wells in Jayapura hobli and surrounding areas have dried-up along with depletion in groundwater.

The 12 villages include: Gopalapura, Anagalli, Ramanahundi, Birihundi, Jattihundi, Maratikyatanahalli and Devagalli.

President of the Mysuru Zilla Panchayath (ZP), Puspa Amaranath, said, that the ZP has started supplying potable water to these villages through tankers.

Ms. Pushpa further said that of the total 1,835 pipeline water supply systems, 115 had become defunct and similarly out of 11,028 hand-pumps, 1,630 are non-operational. Of the 1,635 mini-water supply system, 159 had become defunct.

She said that the State government had released an amount of Rs. 105 lakh was directly released to 235 GPs a few days ago. The GPs were instructed to use the grant for providing potable water to the villages. She mentioned that the GPs were also instructed to reserve 50 per cent of the 13th finance to tackle drinking-water problem in the villages, adding that steps had been taken to flushing hydro-fracturing bore-wells and re-drilling of bore-wells in villages.

Control rooms have been set up in all the taluk headquarters and one in district headquarters in Mysuru to receive complaints of drinking-water problems and resolve them on war-footing. The Mysuru control room can be contacted at: 0821-2460495.

The President further said that the government had released a grant of Rs. eight crore to be distributed to individual beneficiaries who constructed toilets in their households in the district. Mysuru is in fourth place after Mandya, Koppal and Ramanagara in implementation of “Swachcha Bharat” Mission.
