The former Union Minister Babagouda Patil has sought the resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara holding him responsible for the police action on the family members of famers protesting against the interim verdict of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal.

He also sought the resignation of Dharwad district in-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni for failing to prevent the police from committing excesses against farmers.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, he alleged that Dr. Parameshwara had given a free hand to the police to contain protests soon after the tribunal delivered its verdict.

The Home Minister had made it clear to the police that they would be held responsible for any untoward incident in the wake of the verdict of the tribunal. It was a clear indication of giving a free hand to the police to do anything to contain the protests, he said.

Mr. Patil said that the protests by farmers awaiting justice for long was natural and some of them had pelted a few stones and broken a few chairs.

Yet, this did not warrant the police to become violent and thrash farmers and their families indiscriminately and mercilessly, he added.
