The doctors and house surgeons of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) boycotted work for the second day on Monday, following the attack by unknown persons on house surgeons who were on duty on Sunday night.

Except cases that require emergency care, the doctors are not attending to patients. The outpatient department has been closed and the doctors have resolved to intensify the protest from Wednesday if those accused in the assault were not arrested by Tuesday evening.

House surgeons Shwetha S., Jeevan Y.M., Harsha A., Anil P. and Sanmithra K.A. were assaulted by a group of unknown persons, suspected to be relatives of a patient injured in an accident. It is said that the group was unhappy with the delay in the doctors attending to their relative.

K. Shankar, Medical Superintendent of HIMS, has filed a complaint with the city police. The police have booked a case under IPC Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (provoking breach of peace), and 353 (assault on a public servant), besides the provisions of the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence Against Medicare Service Personnel and Damage to Property in Medicare Service Institutions Act, 2009.

HIMSTA support

HIMS Teachers’ Association (HIMSTA) too has extended support to the protest, with the teachers set to go on an indefinite protest from Wednesday. Association president G.P. Ramanath and secretary T. Lakshmeesha, in a press release issued here on Monday, condemned the assault.
