As many as 140 candidates, who had filed nomination papers for the upcoming elections to gram panchayats, have been declared elected unopposed in Dharwad district.
Hubballi taluk has highest of 46 such candidates followed by 40 in Navalgund, 26 in Kalghatagi, 16 in Dharwad and 12 in Kundagol. The elections to the remaining 1,960 seats in 135 gram panchayats will be held on May 29.
Deputy Commissioner P. Rajendra Cholan told presspersons here on Friday that 5,867 candidates, including 3,300 men and 2,567 women, remained in the fray. Nomination papers had not been filed in 22 wards. The elections in Tadakod village would be held on June 4 because of technical reasons, he added.
The Election Commission of India had deputed Ilias Ulla Sharief as the election observer. He could be contacted on his cellphone on 9448207179.
People could bring irregularities or malpractices to his notice, he said. Superintendent of Police Vamshikrishna said of the 696 polling stations in the district, 103 had been identified as hypersensitive, 155 as sensitive and 438 as normal.
The police was taking steps to curb instances of violation of the election model code of conduct and malpractices.
Ten check-posts had been set up to maintain vigil and prevent illegal transportation of liquor.
The police had arrested three persons in connection with threatening a candidate in Tavarageri village of Kalghatagi taluk, he added.
Elections will be held in Tadakod village on June 4
