The police have arrested 14 persons allegedly assaulted two persons at Herga village coming under Manipal police station limits on Sunday night.

The police said on Monday that a group of 19 persons including the former President of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Dinakar Shetty allegedly assaulted two persons in connection with a dispute about an earthmover (JCB) at Herga between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

According to a complaint given by a person, Peter D’Souza, about 19 persons including Mr. Dinakar attacked brothers Boniface and Anthony with weapons between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

As a result, Boniface and Anthony had suffered injuries on their hands, legs, face and head. They both have been shifted to Kasturba Hospital here for treatment.

However, in a counter complaint filed at the same police station, Akshith Shetty alleged that he was riding a motorcycle at Kudange Temple in Herga, but he was stopped by Bonface, Peter and Anthony, the earthmover (JCB) driver as well as two others. Peter attacked him and later pushed him into a drain. The group had weapons in their hands, he said. With regard to both the complaints, two cases had been registered under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147, 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 341 (wrongful restraint), 324, 326 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and 506 (criminal intimidation) read with Section 149 of Indian Penal Code at Manipal police station and investigations were on, the police said.

K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, said on Monday that those arrested had also been charged with Section 307 (attempt to murder). Mr. Dinakar was questioned with regard to the case, he said.
