Fakhruddin T. Khorakiwala, founder of the country's first departmental store Akbarallys and also former sheriff of Mumbai, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93.

“My father was a pillar of strength to all of us. He was always positive and stayed committed to communal harmony and was extremely concerned about social uplift,” Habil Khorakiwala, his son and chairman of pharma company Wockhardt, said in a statement.

As sheriff of Mumbai during the 1992-93 post-Ayodhya communal riots, Mr. Fakhruddin Khorakiwala organised a 100-km human chain against sectarian violence.
