Police on Tuesday have launched an investigation into a letter that reached the Bharatiya Janata Party’s State Committee office at Thampanoor here, threatening dire consequences if Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to Kerala.

According to H. Venkatesh, City Police Commissioner, the letter, addressed to V.V. Rajesh, State spokesperson of the BJP was posted apparently from Mavelikara.

Written in Malayalam and with an accompanying collage of pictures of Mr. Modi and purportedly one of British aid worker David Haines, who was beheaded by Islamic State (IS) extremists, the letter accused Mr. Modi of “killing Muslims, earlier in Gujarat and now in Pakistan too,” and said he would meet the same fate as that of Haines if he reached Kerala.

The letter is signed ‘SDPI, Mannar Unit, Alappuzha District.’
