BJP appears to be headed for an unprecedented clear majority in Haryana, breaching the citadels of the Congress Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Rohtak as also the Sirsa area of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) headed by former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.

In the 90-member assembly, the BJP is leading in close to 50 constituencies, leaving behind stalwarts from other parties.

The election is a test of the BJP's untested strategy of going it alone, having shed its regional partner the Haryana Janhit Congress, a month before elections.

With no mass leaders of pan Haryana stature to lead the campaign, the party relied on prime minister Narendra Modi's charisma to swing votes in its favour.

The party's four aspirants for chief ministership are also leading in their constituencies.
