The Army on Saturday successfully test-fired the land attack variant of the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at the Pokhran test range in Rajasthan.
BrahMos, a joint effort between India and Russia, is the only supersonic cruise missile in the world capable of flying at 2.8 times the speed of sound and can be launched from land, sea and air.
“BrahMos missile system, the most lethal and potent weapon system for precision strike available with the Indian Army, has proved its effectiveness again in today’s successful launch,” Sudhir Mishra, chief of BrahMos Aerospace, said after the launch.
Deployed on border
The Army operationalised the missile in 2007 and has deployed three regiments along the border with Pakistan, all of them equipped with Block-III version having steep dive capability for precision strikes in the mountains. These were validated in user trials in May this year.
Preparations are now on to test-fire the air launched version of BrahMos from a modified Su-30 MKI aircraft of the Air Force.
