Villagers reel under jumbo fear

Pedduru village of Ramakuppam mandal continues to reel under fear of wild elephants for the last one month even as a herd of 7 elephants was spotted in the vicinity on Friday damaging standing crops of vegetables and maize.

The villagers, who woke up in the early hours to celebrate the Kanuma festival heard the trumpeting of elephants from their fields. They could not venture out till daybreak and they found their crops damaged in the morning.

Forest Range Officer (Kuppam) Kalappa Naidu said the elephants were making constant presence at Pedduru village and its surroundings. "We will speed up works on solar fencing and trenches from SaturdayThe situation is not alarming and the people need not worry," he said.

Mr Kalappa Naidu said the lone elephant which created panic among several villages in Ramakuppam mandal for 20 days had rejoined its herd.
