Heavy rain lashed Ongole city and other parts of Prakasam district in the wee hours of Monday, bringing cheers to the farmers and others in the drought-prone region.

However, commuters were put to hardship as low-lying areas, including the arterial roads, Kurnool road, were inundated as the downpour continued for nine hours. Though the showers brought relief from the oppressive heat, power supply to many areas in the city was disrupted. Transco officials restored power supply in phases by Monday evening.

Trees were also uprooted due to heavy gale that accompanied with the rain, which ended the prolonged dry spell in the drought-hit district. Denizens complained that their electrical appliances developed snags due to lightning and thunder.

Meanwhile, weather officials have predicted more rain in the next 48 hours in the district.

Chinnaganjam recorded a rainfall of 10.4 cm, followed by Ongole and Kothapatnam (4.8 cm), Pedaraveedu (4.5 cm), Yerragondapalem (4.2 cm), Vetapalem (4 cm), Martur (3.9 cm).
