A festive atmosphere prevailed at Mahasamudram village of Bangarupalem mandal in the district, with the local anganwadi centre getting the coveted ISO certificate on Friday, in recognition of the unprecedented development it registered in a year.

At a specially arranged function, Shilpa, wife of district Collector P.S. Pradyumna, presented the certificate to the officials of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and hosted a community lunch to celebrate the occasion with the anganwadi centre children, their parents, and villagers.

Ms. Shilpa had adopted the centre on July 31, 2017, providing sophisticated facilities there.

Interacting with the gathering, Ms. Shilpa said the certification gave her immense happiness.

“I have no words to appreciate the teachers, who followed my suggestions in true spirit. When I first visited the centre last year, it was bereft of even minimal facilities. In one year, the achievement is a miracle. I want to see all the anganwadi centres to be like this,” she said.

Ms. Shilpa, during her first visit, had provided all the basic facilities to the centre, including drinking water and power. This led to extending the same facilities to all the centres in the district.

After adopting the Mahasamudram unit, she provided dresses, books, stationary, and facility of nutritious food to the children. She even nurtured a ‘nutri garden’ on the centre’s premises with her own funds. Her frequent visits to the village encouraged the teachers, parents, and villagers to be part of the mission, which ushered in development on several fronts.

Sage advice

“I told one important thing to the teachers here. Just treat these children as their own. It worked wonders. The children could recite a good number of rhymes and do simple maths with ease. There is a lot of change in their discipline. I have no doubt, all the anganwadi centres in the district will soon create history,” she said.

The village elders and parents later felicitated Ms. Shilpa.
