Pregnancy of a 28-year-old woman Sri Lakshmi was allegedly aborted in the fifth month on Monday at Shreya Hospital here after the foetus was found to be female in a scan conducted four days ago.
The health condition of the woman is now stable after District Medical and Health Officer K.V.N.S. Anil Kumar along with government doctor Sujatha visited the hospital and checked the health condition on coming to know about the incident. A unit of blood was given to the patient and the hospital was advised not to discharge the patient till the DM&HO gave permission.
The DMHO said that investigation was being conducted on the incident in which the woman had come to the hospital four days ago and this being the second pregnancy with a female child in the first one, they allegedly agreed for an abortion. The health department with a network of informers came to know that sex determination test of the foetus was done.
Scanning equipment of the hospital was seized and statements of the hospital doctor Rajyalakshkmi, the patient and other hospital staff was recorded in the presence of some witnesses. Under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, the equipment was seized and licence would be cancelled if found guilty, he added.
Dr. Rajyalakshmi said they had not conducted abortion, but she came to the hospital with pain in the stomach and the foetus got expelled while in the hospital. The reasons of abortion would be probed and if found guilty the matter would be referred to the Medical Council of India and the practising licence of the doctor would be cancelled by sealing the hospital, Dr. Anil Kumar added.
