Krishna district authorities are planning to link more than 500 fair price shops under the Public Distribution System (PDS) with biometric system to ensure transparency in distribution of listed commodities.

According to an official release, four cell phone network companies, including Airtel, Reliance and BSNL, have already begun an exercise that tests internet signals in the identified 500 villages to implement the pilot project.

“The initiative will help maintain online data pertaining to availability of stock of commodities and its procurement by authorised dealers,” said Krishna district Collector Babu. A. The project makes inspection of fair price shops easier for officials.

Once the availability of internet signals was documented, the existing fair price shops will be shifted to the nearest panchayat office, anganwadi centre or any government offices in the panchayat. Teams representing cell phone networking companies are likely to submit their reports to the Krishna District Collector in a few months to implement the pilot project.
