The newly-formed Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam University would focus on honing soft skills of students so that they stood a better chance to bag lucrative jobs after completion of their courses, said its Vice-Chancellor Rokkam Sudarshana Rao.
Addressing reporters after interacting with staff members at the P.G.Centre here on Wednesday, he said a skill development centre would be started soon on the campus in collaboration with the the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation.
Mr. Rao, also the Vice-Chancellor of the Vikrama Simhapuri University, said though the initial response of students in Nellore was not satisfactory, 80 students were being trained in each batch of the skill development programme.
“My aim is to see that students of the university are fully equipped to get suitable jobs on the completion of courses,” he said, adding that a civil services corner would be set up at the campus library to help students excel in competitive exams.
Model university
Mr. Rao, who will lead the university named after Andhra State's first Chief Minister, said it would be developed into a model university by designing courses and creating infrastructure in the next 10 years.
The university had an advantage of owning 100 acres, he said, adding that the Ongole campus special officer G.Somasekara was consulted on the blueprint for developing infrastructure in two phases at Pernamitta on the city outskirts.
Apart from improving existing courses, new district-specific technical courses on food technology, mining and aquaculture would be started soon to meet the needs of local industries.
The Ongole P.G.Centre staff members led by Harsha Preetam Dev of the Social Work Department gave a reception to the Vice-Chancellor on his first visit to the campus.
