It was 12 a.m. Thursday. Celebrations were in full swing at a marriage function hall at Satyavedu, a mandal headquarters, in the district with the ‘muhurt’ fixed in the early hours.
Meanwhile, the police received a call on ‘100’ that a bomb had been planted at the function hall. The call triggered a frenzy of activity as its timing, with only a few hours left for the Independence Day celebrations to begin, kept the police on their toes.
Circle Inspector B.V. Srinivasulu and Sub-Inspector Nagarjuna Reddy, along with a team, rushed to the spot, and launched the search operation. The function hall, which was bustling with activity till then, wore a deserted look as the guests had to leave the venue amid tension.
Dog squad
A dog squad was requisitioned from the Puttur police sub-division office. The bomb disposal and dog squads had a hectic time till the early hours of the day before they proved the call to be a hoax.
The police said that the number from which the call had emerged remained switched off.
A police team was pressed into service to track the number and zero in on the culprits.
