At the annual review of the state of backward class welfare hostels in this district on Tuesday, wardens were advised that their active intervention could drastically reduce health risk to the boarders.

Rashtriya Bala Swastha Karyakram (RBSK) Chittoor district officer Dr. A. Sudarshan told hostel welfare officers that 90 per cent of the health risks reported from BC hostels could be prevented through simple hand-washing and deworming.

“Similarly students with eye problems go undetected as they do not come forward to express their difficulties due to lack of awareness or a feeling that it would be a stigma on them,” said Dr Sudarshan.
