Security tight for Kanhaiya

Considering the assault on JNU Students’ Union president at Patiala House Courts on Wednesday and the Supreme Court’s subsequent instructions for Kanhaiya Kumar’s safety, Tihar jail officials are leaving nothing to chance. Hours before Mr. Kumar arrived at Tihar Jail, prison authorities hurriedly readied a separate cell. A lathi-wielding Tamil Nadu Special Police man and a jail staff member will guard him round-the-clock while an armed Quick Response Team will be deployed near his ward at all times.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Wednesday produced an appeal letter purportedly written by Kanhaiya before he left for the court. Apparently signed by Kanhaiya, the letter appealed for restoring peace in the “country, society and universities”. “I believe in India’s unity and integrity and do not support any unconstitutional activities,” followed the contents of his appeal.
