A voter turnout of 34 and 37 per cent respectively was recorded till noon in the ongoing by-elections to one Lok Sabha and one Assembly constituency in West Bengal.

Over 34 per cent polling was recorded in Bongaon (SC) Lok Sabha seat in North 24 Parganas district and nearly 37 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Krishnaganj (SC) Assembly seat of Nadia district till 12 noon, Assistant Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Amitjyoti Bhattyacharia told PTI.

“Polling is going on peacefully and there has been no untoward incident till now,” he said.

The by-polls are being viewed as crucial for the ruling Trinamool Congress at a time when the party is facing heat over the Saradha scam.

While 11 candidates, including two women, are contesting the Bongaon (SC) Lok Sabha seat, five candidates are in the electoral race in Krishnaganj (SC) Assembly seat.
