BJP continues to back Jaitley but Kirti defiant

AAP’s allegations aimed at distracting attention from CBI raid, says BJP

Even as the Aam Aadmi Party continued its attack on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday — alleging a “scam” in the DDCA when he was at the helm — BJP leaders said there was “nothing” in the charges.

There was buzz that BJP chief Amit Shah had summoned party MP Kirti Azad and asked him not to speak further on the matter, but BJP leaders refused to confirm it.

PTI, however, quoted Mr. Azad as saying: “It was a good meeting. But I will hold a press conference [on DDCA] on Sunday.”

The one politically jarring note of Mr. Azad’s stridency apart, the BJP continues to strongly back Mr. Jaitley, saying the AAP’s allegations were aimed at distracting attention from a CBI raid against a key Delhi government official close to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The issue again came up for discussion at a meeting of BJP national spokespersons with Mr. Jaitley in Parliament, sources said. When contacted, Mr. Azad told The Hindu over telephone that he would go ahead with his Sunday presser.

“When the Prime Minister himself says that he will neither commit a wrong nor allow anyone else to commit it, who will stop me from fighting corruption?”

A day earlier, when asked about an MP from his own party attacking him, Mr. Jaitley had said: “That is a good question addressed to the wrong man.”
