The government hopes the impasse in Parliament will end on Monday when the two Houses meet again.
And the Opposition parties are also not in favour of continuing the disruption, as they have “already proved their point” about high prices.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is understood to have consulted Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on filling positions in the Central Vigilance Commission. Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P. Chidambaram were present. Apparently, the impasse also came up, though it could not be immediately known whether any understanding was reached on ending it.
Amid all this, there was more than a hint from sources in the government. A Minister said: “Everything will be fine on Monday.”
Talking to reporters, Ms. Swaraj suggested that the Opposition was successful in highlighting the common man's concern at inflation, especially the high prices of food articles, over an entire week.
BJP deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha S.S. Ahluwalia, however, maintained that “fresh notices” were given by the party under Rule 184 in the Lok Sabha and Rule 168 in the Rajya Sabha.
Left parties' stance
Left parties have also made the point they are not in favour of repeated disruption of Parliament. On Thursday, along with some other Opposition parties, they had staged a protest against price rise outside the main gate of the Parliament House.
Apparently, some other parties — the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Bahujan Samaj Party and even National Democratic Alliance partners like the Janata Dal (United) — have made it clear that they are not interested in continuing the ruckus.
