With the charge sheet in the 2G spectrum allocation scam due to be filed on Saturday, the CBI on Friday told a court here that there could be a “connection” between Green House Promoters managing director Sadiq Batcha's alleged suicide and a huge cash payment made to that company by DB Realty, co-owned by Shahid Balwa.
CBI counsel told Special Judge O. P. Saini that there could be a connection between the payment made to Green House Promoters, in which the former Telecom Minister, A. Raja's wife was a director, the disappearance of Batcha's driver with the cash, and the subsequent suicide of Batcha.
On Wednesday, the CBI sought two days police custody of Kusegaon Realty co-owners Asif Balwa and Rajiv Aggarwal, on the grounds that a document pertaining to a payment of Rs.200 crore made by DB Realty to Kalaignar TV through the bank accounts of the Kusegaon Realty and Cineyug Films had to be recovered from them.
On Friday, the CBI sought three more days custody of Rajiv Aggarwal, who the agency said was the chief operating officer of DB Realty and had to be questioned further about the cash payment to Green House Promoters.
The investigating agency also sought 14-day judicial custody of Asif Balwa and told the judge that his interrogation was over for the time being, but if required his further police custody would be “sought within the stipulated time.”
Vijay Aggarwal, counsel for Rajiv Aggarwal, said the extension of remand for his client was unjustified and demanded that the CBI submit evidence it had against his client.
Extending the CBI's custody of Rajiv Aggarwal till April 4, Mr. Saini said, “There is a statement on record that Green House Promoters, Chennai, were having close relations with DB Realty and the witness also mentions accused Rajiv Aggarwal.”
