Security officials say a suicide bomber detonated his explosives among policemen standing in line outside a police base in the southern Yemen city of Mukalla, killing 12.

The officials say Sunday’s blast also injured 17 others.

The victims were policemen returning to work following last month’s recapture of the city by forces of the internationally recognized government. The port city has been held for more than a year by Yemen’s local al-Qaeda affiliate. The victims also included young men applying for jobs with the city’s local police.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday’s attack, which bore the hallmarks of Islamic militants.
