Strong quake strikes off Solomon Islands

A powerful earthquake rattled the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Officials said there is no threat of a tsunami and no damage has been reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.5-magnitude quake struck on Friday about 165 kilometres west of the capital, Honiara, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami.

Steve Nasiu of the Solomon’s National Disaster Management Office said there have been no reports of damage or injuries.
