A four-year-old boy in the southwest Chinese city of Chongqing has been killed after being trapped under an escalator handrail at a subway station, the third death in over 2 months in similar incident.
The accident happened on Thursday when the child, who was left unattended while his mother went to a nearby restroom, played at the escalator before falling over and trapped, the People’s Daily reported.
He was rushed to hospital but died later.
Hongqiaohegou subway station staff shut off the escalator after 20 seconds.
It was the fourth such accident in over 2 months, sparking concerns over the safety of over 2.4 million escalators currently being used in China.
On July 27, a 30-year-old woman was crushed to death after falling into an escalator at a shopping mall in Jingzhou in Hubei province. One more woman was killed on July 28 when she got stuck in the gap between the lift and the platform.
In August, a cleaner at a mall in Shanghai had his leg amputated as it got stuck in an escalator.
