Freedom fighters, political and cultural activists on Tuesday protested against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Khaleda Zia near her home for her remarks on Bangladesh Liberation War martyrs.

They gathered at Gulshan-2 intersection, near M. Zia’s home, when they were stopped by the police, who told them that the house was located in diplomatic enclave where any meeting, rally or procession was possible only with prior police permission.

Protesters shout slogans

Alongside ‘Joy Bangla’, the protesters shoued slogans like “My motherland won’t be allowed to become Pakistan” and “No space for Pakistan lovers in Bangladesh”.

On December 21, the BNP chief, in her first public address in more than a year, abruptly raised a new controversy, expressing doubts about the the Liberation War casualty figures.

Ms. Zia’s comments came close on the heels of Pakistan’s denial in November of committing any war crimes or atrocities in the nine-month bloody war.
