Six suicide bombers attacked a USAID compound on Friday in northern Afghanistan, killing at least two people and wounding several others.

One attacker blew up a sports utility vehicle at about 3.30 am at the entrance and the other five stormed the building, said Gen. Abdul Razaq Yaqoubi, chief of police in Kunduz province.

One Afghan policeman and a security guard were killed in the attack, according to Yaqoubi and Gen. Abdul Wakil Assas, an Afghan National Army battalion commander at the scene.

The bodies of five suicide attackers were recovered from two floors of the building used by Development Alternatives Inc., which has a USAID contract to work on local governance and community development issues in the city, Gen. Assas said.

Separately, NATO said a U.S. service member died Friday in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan.
