An India-bound chemical tanker is suspected to have been hijacked by pirates as it was passing through the Gulf of Aden on New Year’s Day.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said on Saturday, that M.T. Pramoni, registered in this City-State, was on its way from Genoa (Italy) to Kandla.

Contacted by The Hindu , the media agency for the ship manager, GBLT Shipmanagement Pte Ltd, said there seemed to be no Indian among the 24-member crew on board. The company said in a statement that “the crew includes Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Nigerian nationals.”

The ship, carrying 15,000 tonnes of chemical cargo, was “travelling along the security corridor in the Gulf and was [being] assisted by international security navy forces” when it was seized.
